Panel Discussion “Impact of Weak Institutions and Corruption on Energy Investment in South East Europe”

SEE Change Net in cooperation with European Environmental Bureau (EEB), World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), CEE Bankwatch and 14 CSOs from South East Europe which are all part of SEE SEP (South East Europe Sustainable Energy Policy) partnership, are organizing a panel discussion “Impact of Weak Institutions and Corruption on Energy Investment in South East Europe” as a part of EU Sustainable Energy Week 2014. The discussion is going to be held on June 24, from 09:00 to 10:45 in the Jenkins room of Charlemagne building of the European Commission in Brussels.

Between 2020 and 2025 several more of the countries of South East Europe will, in all probability, become European Union member states. However, in the next 10 years, these very same countries plan to spend almost 30 € billion on energy projects which – with a life span of 40+ years – will in all likelihood lead them away from, and not towards, the EU 2020 and 2030 path to a totally decarbonized society in 2050.

The challenge is not just to develop a more sophisticated solution to these pressing energy problems in the region, but to develop the institutional standards that will help to attract the kind of investors which will be of long term benefit to the region.

Journalists, prosecutors and CSO experts in the field of transparency and environment, as well as authentic voices from future EU member states CSOs will, for the first time, have a chance to discuss topics of investment issues and regional cooperation.
